What this tool does

Enter initial investment, final value, and costs. Optionally enter start and end dates to get an annualized ROI. The tool returns net profit, ROI percentage, and annualized ROI when dates are provided.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the amount you started with and the amount it ended up worth.
  2. Add any costs or fees that should reduce the gain.
  3. Optionally add start and end dates for an annualized ROI.
  4. Read net profit, ROI, and annualized ROI.

Formula

Net Profit = Final Value − Initial Investment − Costs
ROI = Net Profit ÷ Initial Investment × 100
Annualized ROI = (Final ÷ Initial)^(1 ÷ Years) − 1

Example

$10,000 in, $15,000 out, $200 in fees, over 3 years. Net profit = $4,800. ROI = 48%. Annualized ROI ≈ 14% per year.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing investments by total return when they ran over different periods.
  • Forgetting fees, slippage, and taxes.
  • Ignoring opportunity cost — what would the same money have earned elsewhere?
